Kay is joined by Singleton and Flaherty tonight in Minnesota. Game is on My9 so I don't expect a win. The Yankees also announced Joba will start on Tuesday so I'm sure a bunch of questions will be asked about that situation.
It's the 8th inning and I really haven't heard any questions. Might have been one but I don't recall. My blog might have to be shut-down if this keeps up. ;)
About Kay's Questions
Kay's Questions is a blog dedicated to tracking the insane amount of questions Michael Kay poses to his co-announcers during the New York Yankee telecasts on the YES Network. Michael Kay's "style" of calling the Yankee games drives me nuts. I obviously cannot watch every minute of every Yankee game so other Kay-detractors are welcome to add to the list. It will be fun to see how many times he repeats the same question throughout the baseball campaign.

05.28.08
I wonder what Kay has in store for us tonight? Very little question asking last night. Very weird, but pleasurable. My one gripe from last night is his "for those new to baseball" move. I can't stand that. He says that then follows with the simplest explanation for something in the game like "for those new to the game, when a batter swings and misses, that is called a strike." C'mon Michael, let the parents teach the kids about baseball, they don't need you. Just call the game.
"Kenny, you played in Memorial Park. Did it play big?"
Ugh! Again with the "...ties a record, held by many, with three put-outs in an inning." You're not witty or original.
That's it again! Maybe he's getting bored of Singleton? He does seem to ask more questions with the more current ex-players.

05.27.08...Yanks in Baltimore
I missed the three games over the weekend. I a few family functions to attend. I managed to watch parts of the three games and I did hear a few dumb questions but I can't remember what they are so Kay gets a pass.
Tonight Kay is joined by Ken Singleton in Baltimore.
Giambi hits a bomb and then Burris gives up a couple more hits.
"Kenny you would think he's kind of unnerved after giving up a long ball like that?"
Amazingly not much else!

05.23.08...Memorial Day Weekend, Mariners Back in Town
Weird schedule. Seattle was just here a couple weeks ago. Kay is joined by David Cone today. The game is also on My9.
Kay rattles off some stats regarding Bedard and his catchers, he has a higher ERA with one vs the other. (If Kay just looks Bedard was bombed in 1 start this year & it probably was with the catcher he has a higher ERA with but he has to ask anyway.)
"Now I turn to you David, why is that?" Cone responds then gets one of Kay's favorites...
"Is it mental?"
Talking about Ichiro
"Where is Ichiro's weakness?"
"Wouldn't he be susceptible to the outside pitch the way he hits?"
"I've always wondered David, when a catcher sits so far outside can't the hitter see him?" 'I've always wondered' is another favorite of Kay's. So annoying.
AGAIN, regarding Pettitte struggling in the 4th innings of games...*Please Andy get through this inning so Kay could stop asking the same questions every game you pitch!
"Do you think he's getting fatigued in the 4th or (HERE IT IS AGAIN!) is it a mental thing?"
Gotta run out...Kay has a free pass tonight.

Flash & Singleton still with Kay.
Discussing the bad calls by the umps lately on HRs and MLB possibly going to replay...
"Instant replay, are you guys in favor or not?"
Kennedy pitching well.
"What do you see different from Kennedy tonight that you havn't seen recently?"
Flaherty is talking about how they altered Baltimore pitcher's delivery...
"Why would that give him better movement John?" And the classic answer "I have no idea." by Flaherty
Not bad again. I can live with the new Kay, let's see if it lasts.

05.21.08
Hopefully a better performance that last night. That was brutal and it wasn't even Kay's fault.
"Now he didn't have any broken bones but is it possible the hand could be sore and affect his swing?" C'mon Kay, are you for real? What a really dumb question.
Haha! They were talking about Oriole batting coach Terry Crowly then the camera shows him & somehow audio of the famous Earl Weaver rant where he curses and says "f'n Terry Crowley" comes over the telecast. Kay & crew sort of went quiet so they had to have heard it.
Joba working a 2nd inning...
"Could this be the beginning of stretching him (Joba) out for a starters roll?"
Not much else tonight. Kay was actually listenable tonight.

05.20.08...O's in Town, ARod Returns!!!
Due to a rain out, Kay's mini vacation and games on Fox and ESPN, we've been without Kay for awhile except for Saturday. Don't fret, he's back with Flaherty & Singleton in the booth.
"I've always wondered John when you're catching, do you see the runner going or do you need someone to yell 'going'?" Sure, you've always wondered that. Then he asks "what if there is a lefty up?"
"If you're catching and you have a 7-0 lead, does it change your gameplan?"
"Now, did you guys spend any time on the DL?"
"Did it take long for you to get your swing back?"
I bailed on the game. The Yankees looked terrible and uninterested. A very, very poor performance.

05.17.08...The Other NY team invades the Bronx
Our almost 1 week break from Kay has sadly come to an end. The Yankees were rained out last night and surprisingly not on Fox today so we have the pleasure of an early start with Kay. His pals in the booth are the two ex-Yankee pitchers, Cone and Leiter.
On Pettitte's struggles later in games.
"Do you think he just tires? Is he getting old, what could it be?"
"Did you guys when you were preparing to start the game, did you have the lineup card in front of you?" Then Al answers with an "Of course" like saying 'you idiot, what kind of question is that'?
Then the dumb flollow-up...
"Then do you pick a guy in the lineup and you say 'I'm not going to let him beat me' and figure out possible scenarios where he can't beat you?"
Pettitte picks off a runner.
"Al when you picked someone off did it feel like a free out?"
I think he asks this one everytime Pettitte pitches...
"David, why is he so good now versus righties when he was never dominate against righties?"
Again, regarding Pettitte's struggles in the 4th and beyond.
"Now we've mentioned his struggles in later innings does he start mentally thinking about it?"
The cameras pick-up Pettitte mouthing the pitch he wants to throw to Moehler.
"Would he actually mouth that? What if the hitter saw him?" Haha! Then Cone and Leiter give him tons of examples of who else used to do it and that it's pretty common.
"Does a pitcher lose anything sitting on the bench for 24 minutes?" Again, Kay asks this type of question EVERY SINGLE TIME a team has a long inning! You know the f'n answer Kay!!!!
They show Delgado tapping his foot at the plate...
"Is that because he's trying to make up for the lost bat speed?"
"For which team do you think the Subway Series was more important to?"

And even better no Timmy "Perhaps" McCarver and Joe Buck! Eric Karros and I don't remember the other guy's name (I'll find it) but they were very good and enjoyable to listen to.

05.09.08...Kay invades Detroit
Yesterday's game was a day game so I was at work & I wasn't about to watch the replay to hear all of Kay's annoying questions. Let's just assume there were plenty.
The Yankees are back on the road in Detroit and Ken Singleton and Al Leiter are in the booth with Kay. Leiter usually brings out plenty of questions especially with two lefties on the mound. Could be bad. Game is also on My9 and they have lost 2 of the last 3 on My9.
"As a pitcher did you like the 'bowling alley' that is carved in front of the mound?"
"Who on the Yankees gave you the most trouble?"
"Now what does holding the ball do Al, make the runner tense? Tire him out?" Another example of Kay needing to inject himself into the game. I'm sure he really had no idea why a pitcher will hold the ball longer when a speedy runner is on first.
That was about it. Not bad. Another loss on My9 though. It's like because they are on free TV they are supposed to lose & tell everyone if you want to see a win you better get YES.

05.07.08
Flaherty returns along with Cone to see if Kay can back up his record outing last night with another annoying performance. I missed the first hour of the game so I'm picking it up in the top of the fourth.
Kay rattles off a bunch of negative stats about Hafner then asks..
"At what point does he start to think he cannot hit anymore?" Again this is the same dumb question he asks about Giambi and it always gets the same responses.
"John, what do you see in Cliff Lee?"
"Now is he difficult to pick up because at 91 everyone seems to be late on him?"
Not much else. He must have been worn out from his 'dominate' performance the night before. Plus Cone and Flaherty like to talk and they gab an awful lot.

05.06.08...Indians in town
Kay is joined only by David Cone for this series.
On Carmona's increased walks
"David why would there be such a change in walk-ratio for Carmona? What's up?"
"Any mental advantage to having a 1 run lead?"...what a dumb question. He then goes on to explain what Bobby Murcer told him about Billy Martin's theory on scoring first. Kay, you knew that story so why even ask that question?
RE: Micah Owings
"What's more important a number 3 starter or a guy who can play 162 games?"
"What do you think harder to find, a guy who can hit HR's or a number 3 starter?"
Talking about Pettitte's pitches.
"So how does a change-up go? Now how would he hold a cutter?" Haha! If you go back to 4/25/08 in a game vs Cleveland he asks basically the same questions and Cone goes through the same demonstration!
"How about going to a backdoor cutter?"
"Now let me ask you this David, what's the difference between a cutter and a fastball?" C'mon Michael?!? How long have you been around baseball? You really don't know?
Molina gives sign for Pettitte to shake him off.
"Why does a catcher tell a pitcher to shake him off?" Again, you know the answer Kay. Cone then goes on and on and Kay asks...
"Now you were a guy that wanted to think on the mound?"
"Now let throw this at you, Pettitte has had success with the cutter, why is he messing with the outside corner?"
"Now that was scored a wild pitch, would you call upstairs after the game and tell them it wasn't a passed ball, it was your fault?"
The Yankees are having a long inning and this is a question always asked during it...
"Does a pitcher mind the long innings or does he kind of get stiff in the dugout?"
They just updated Ian Kennedy's 1st start in the minors.
"Now I'm gonna throw a question at you, is Ian Kennedy doing better because of the lesser competition or because there is less pressure?"
"Greatest pitcher umpire you've ever had?"
"Would he have survived Queztech?"
Discussing Carmona's struggles
"He's really missing outside to lefties, what is the manifestation?"
"You always hear a pitcher is flying open, what does that mean?"
"Now when it opens up does that mean the pitcher is trying to get to much on the ball?"...Again Kay and 99% of all viewers know the answers to these questions. Either Kay likes to talk or he thinks this is the 1st game we are all watching.
*Record Alert!!! Kay is going for the new record for most questions asked in one game! This is even more amazing because there is only one person in the booth with him!
Jeter makes an error...
"Does a pitcher have to fight it now because he shouldn't be in this jam?"
Camera shows Pettitte having a conversation with Posada
"I was wondering that would it bother Molina that Pettitte was talking with Posada?"
Pettitte is done for the day...
"So what did you think of Andy today?"
Joba seems to be shaking off Molina a bunch of times...
"What is going on with all of this dialogue with Joba and Molina?"
At least 22 questions (that I caught) asked by Michael Kay tonight! That is a new record!!! Wow! How f'n annoying?!?

05.04.08...Welcome back Bobby Murcer!
Bobby Murcer is in the booth with O'neill and Kay today.
To Murcer...
"Did you ever go to Studio 54?"
Ichiro steals his 5th base of the series & prompts these questions...
"We mention Maclarren wants Ichiro to steal 80 bases but do you really want Ichiro running that much? Don't you think that will wear him down?"
"Bobby you've served almost every position in a baseball organization did you ever want to get into coaching?"
Bobby then says Lou Pinella asked him...and there's a break in the action so...
"Bobby why did you turn him down?"
The catcher took a ball off his hand.
"Bobby are you sending the runner now after the catcher just hurt his hand?"
Talking about Giambi falling in love with the short-porch in Yankee Stadium.
"Now Bobby you played here when the right field wall was 296, did it get enticing?"
"Now Paul you were a hitter that liked to hit to all fields, did you ever try and pull the ball too much?"
On switch hitting.
"Either of you guys try?"

05.01.08
Leiter & Flaherty still working with Kay. Phil Hughes just went on the DL and Ian Kennedy is pitching so there could be a lot of things there for Kay to ask about.
Enough with the " ...ties an American League record with 3 put-outs in one inning." You just said that last night, there's nothing witty about it.
Robertson has better numbers vs righties than lefties.
"Now what would dictate those numbers John?"
Yet another example of Kay liking to hear himself talk.
"Did you ever have a Reggie Bar John?"
Eiland has a fast trip to the mound.
"That was a quick trip to the mound. Why would that happen?"
It's raining and Kay asks these dumb questions. Like he's never broadcast a game in the rain before or for that matter, ever been out in the rain before.
"John, does it get slippery out there? Al, how about the mound?"
About playing under Jim Leyland
"Is Leyland like Bobby Knight, you hate him as your manager but when you leave or retire you love him?"
The pitcher tries to knock down a come-backer by Sheffield.
"Al you're always taught never to do that (stick your leg or hand out to stop a come-backer), but is it just instinct?"
Stupid question ALERT!!!
"Are you seeing enough fight out of this team? Do you sense a 'whoa-is-me' with all the injuries?"
Kay says Ian Kennedy was supposed to be straightening things out...
"Al what's your review on Ian Kennedy?"
*Do we have to hear about Robinson Cano's slump every single time he comes up? He's 2 for his last 28, 2 for his last 29, 2 for his last 30....on and on and on...ENOUGH! All of us watching know he's not hitting! We watch the games & can see his average. We do not need you to point it out to us all game!
Final question of the night! I'm sure he's never posed this question.
"Guys you've both made that jump (obviously) from AAA to the Majors, is it a big jump?"
