Kay is joined by Singleton and O'Neill tonight. Probably the best team in the booth.
Nada tonight! Wow!
About Kay's Questions
Kay's Questions is a blog dedicated to tracking the insane amount of questions Michael Kay poses to his co-announcers during the New York Yankee telecasts on the YES Network. Michael Kay's "style" of calling the Yankee games drives me nuts. I obviously cannot watch every minute of every Yankee game so other Kay-detractors are welcome to add to the list. It will be fun to see how many times he repeats the same question throughout the baseball campaign.

07.29.08...Yanks No Longer Rolling
Pauly and Flash still in the booth.
"Rasner has such good numbers vs the Orioles but Markakis is 9 for 11 against him, why?"
"Now Paul does a hitter know specifically what they are vs a pitcher or do they just know they hit him well?"
"Paul did you enjoy DHing, did you DH a lot?"
"How is a backup catcher who's paid to play defense expect to hit every 5 days? Is it difficult?"

7.28.08...O's in, Yanks Rolling
After taking 2 of 3 in Boston the Yanks welcome the Orioles into town. They've won 8 of 9 and are looking good.
Kay has O'Neill and Flaherty in the booth.
"How often does a pitcher not have it, then find it?"
"Now is that a special hand-eye coordination or is it just strength?"
Yanks getting killed. Turned the volume down.

07.25.08...Yanks in Beantown
Wednesday's game was a day game so I listed at work and missed Kay. Tonight they are in Boston with Leiter and Cone. This game could produce many, many questions. Stay tuned! Also a My9 game. Ugh!
Right off the bat...
Leiter says Beckett is 'cocky'
"How do you know he's cocky?" He the asks Cone if he was 'cocky'.
They've had this conversation before.
Discussing Cano asking his father to help him hit.
"David did you ever go back to your Dad for help?"
Speaking of Beckett
"Now Al, you were a teammate of Beckett's, how has he changed?"
Some random nonsense.
"Did you enjoy your season in Boston David?"
"Why are body signs more difficult to crack then the traditional finger signs?"
"David you played with him (Varitek), does he mean that much to this team?"
"How would you both pitch Ted Williams?"
"Is there an art to throwing at a hitter?"

7.22.08...Kay is Back! Twins in.
I was out last night so I only listened to Sterling & Waldman. I am very mad at myself that I missed Kay's return. He was gone for about 2 weeks. Of course the All-Star Break gave him a few more days off but he's back now.
He is joined by Al Leiter, his favorite person to examine tonight for the Twins
"Is is hard not to get down if you feel you're being squeezed?"
"Did you ever suck up to umpires?"
Regarding Bret Gardner's struggles.
"Is there that big of a difference between AAA and the Big Leagues?"
"Is it 100 points different?"
Talking about Rasner's better numbers with Moehler behind the plate.
"If a pitcher is in total control of what pitch he throws why does it matter what catcher he is throwing to?"
"Do pitchers get mad at batters who don't swing at anything close?"
"Did you ever learn anything from Mo in the bullpen?"
"Did you compare cutters?"

07.08.08...1st Place Tampa in; Kay is Away
The Yankee games the past two days were on Fox and ESPN so there was nothing to report. They were off Monday too. Now the 1st place Rays are in and Kay is off. I have a feeling when the schedule comes out, Kay plans his days off around the weaker games because he never does Tampa games. I think he has to do all the big games and he never figured Tampa would be this good so it's probably killing him to be away. Oh well, good news for us!

07.04.08 Happy 4th!
The Yankees apparently had some big meeting before the game so that's be the major plot-line for Kay to ask and talk about all game.
Asking about Beckett
"Al, did you know Josh Beckett was special when you played with him in Florida?"
About the fine line between showing up a player/team and being confident.
"Who was it that told you you were crossing the line?"
Its raining so of course...
"Al, who does the rain hurt more, the pitcher or hitter?"
I think he asks this every time it rains.

7.03.08...2nd place Sox visit 3rd place Yanks
TB just swept Boston & they now have a few games lead on the Sox in the Division.
Kay this weekend is joined by Singleton & Al Leiter so I suspect a few more questions.
I wasn't able to post too much (busy working) but Kay did ask a bunch more questions tonight with Al in the booth. He AGAIN asked about Pettitte's cutter vs fast ball and Al gave the demonstration on-screen AGAIN! I believe this is the 3rd time this season he's asked and we've received the demonstration.
He also asked Al about pitching his no-hitter. I believe they've had that conversation before too.
I also would like to count how many times Kay has to say "Manny Being Manny." So annoying! He said it 4 times tonight!
Also, one other thing, ARod needs 1 HR to tie the Mick on the HR list. We don't need the graphics and the whole explanation who Mantle was. EVERYONE watching knows.

Kay with Singleton again.
For starters he made the same comment about Josh Hamilton as he did last night saying his life is more or a "made for TV movie" because of his past drug problems.
Nothing again. He did ask Singleton about his first MLB hit which he asks all the time a rookie is playing.

There was actually no questions tonight.

6.27 - 6.29...Games vs Mets
The Yankees played a day game on Friday so I missed it because of work and I was out Friday night so I missed that too. Saturday the game was called by Buck and Timmy "Perhaps, in My View" McCarver. Sunday I was very busy and tired from softball so I meed the posting that day as well. I did hear Kay ask a question he has asked in the past to David Cone regarding the wet mound. He asked if it was/is difficult to pitch on it.

06.24.08...Yankees Visit Pittsburgh
Kay has Singleton in the booth with him this series and the pattern has held true, Kay for some reason does not quiz/interview Kay. Very strange. Maybe it's because he's worked with Singleton the longest? He doesn't even ask him strategy questions like he does the others. Weird. Oh well, Kay has been silent the first 2 games. Let's see about game 3. Tuesday's game was on My9 and they lost again.
Game was postponed.

06.21.08...Reds make rare trip to the Bronx
I listed to most of the game yesterday so I missed "Kay's Questions?" Yesterday was a My9 game & they lost.
Just picked up the game today at 2:00. Kay still has Flaherty & Cone. Surprised O'Neill isn't here because he used to play for the Reds. Cone always does KC games, Singleton always does Orioles games, etc.
Not much today if anything.
Someone pulled a line drive single into right & Jay Bruce took an odd route to it and it fell in front of him. He then asked Cone if the pitcher gets mad at the fielder & Cone gave the obvious answer of "in the heat of battle, yes, but they bail me out many times."

6.18.08
Kay still has Flaherty & Cone in the booth.
"john you played in both leagues & David you pitched in both leagues, did either of you find the National League easier?"
"Was it easier for you to pitch in the NL because of the pitcher?"
Kay started asking a bunch of questions about Farnsworth and "why is his fastball so hittable sometimes?" and "why does he give up so many HRs?" He then started asking about Mark Wholers and the HR he gave uo to the Yankees in the '96 World Series.

06.17.08...SD in Town
The Padres make a rare appearance at The Stadium. Kay had Flaherty and Cone in the booth so be prepared to be bombarded with questions.
Side Rant: Great job by the other NY team. Eddie Coleman who covers the Mets used the words "classless", "reprehensible", and "disgraceful" to describe how they handled the Willie Randolph situation. They made the poor guy fly to California then after the team won 3 of their last 4, including last night, the fired him and announced it at 3:30 AM Eastern. Willie wasn't Casey Stengle or even Joe Torre but it's not his fault that Jose Reyes and David Wright don't hustle, Carlos Beltran is overrated, Moises Alou can't stay healthy, Billy Wagner is the left-handed version of Trevor Hoffman and can't close a meaningful game and he has a bunch of old players on the roster. GM Omar Minaya is more responsible for the Mets poor record than Willie. That's why the Mets will always be the "other NY team."
The Padre players all toured Yankee Stadium when they played the Yankees in the '98 World Series.
"You were on that team, did you sense they were in awe?"
To Flaherty who played for both teams.
"Is it a different vibe playing in SD vs here?" Obviously dummy, Flaherty just said how different the 2 cities are.
Discussing the Gonzalez brothers playing for SD.
"Could you guys imagine playing MLB with your brothers?"

06.13.08...Yanks Visit Houston
It's been a week since I've been able to post on Kay. Last weekend I was very busy so I missed both KC games on TV but listened on the radio. Then Kay did not make the trip to Oakland but never fear, our hero is back in the booth in Houston tonight. He is joined by Ken Singleton who ordinarily does not draw many questions from Kay. He's well rested so we'll see about that. The game is also a My9 game.
**Awesome! The announcers sound is out to start the game. Perfect YES! Keep it like that and I bet your viewership goes up immensely!
Ugh! Now they took off HD and put the announcers mike's back on. I want it back the other way.
Amazing! No questions asked by Kay!!!

06.06.08...KC in Town
Yesterday was a day game so no posts.
Tonight Kay is joined by Cone, of course because he's from Kansas.
Speaking of Kyle Davies.
"David do you believe in the theory of the AAAA player?"
Talking about the Royals bad season.
"David your folks are from KC so you're there a lot, are the people of the city totally down on this team?"
Talking about Giambi's mustache.
"My question to you David, did you have any superstitions?"
"Could you fathom what Wade Boggs went through with his superstitions?"
Before this line of questioning Kay started interviewing Cone about his early baseball career asking a bunch of draft questions. Tonight on Centerstage, David Cone!
Rasner throws a pitch without Molina giving a sign.
"What does 'no sign' mean? How does the pitcher know?" A couple points on this dumb question: 1) Kay has already asked this question in the past. He knows the answer, and 2) Molina & Rasner just spoke on the mound. Obviously Molina told him the pitch!
Rasner & Molina change the signs.
"The kid at second base got called up 2 days ago, do they think he's stealing signs?"
Kay says something about a rumor that Thurman Muson never gave signs to pitchers.
"Can you believe a catcher can react to all those pitches?"
The cameras show some type of puppets in the crowd.
"Did you have Rock-em Sock-em Robots when you were a kid?"
Kay now begins to quiz Cone about where he puts his awards in his house. He loves these types of interview questions. He asks all the former players these questions.

06.04.08
The Day after Joba's first start. Kay & Al again.
Camera shows a fan with an umbrella.
"Al why don't they allow umbrellas at the Marlins games?"
"Al we always talk about pitchers throwing 1st pitch strikes, did you ever not want to throw a batter a 1st pitch strike?" Al says Jimmy Key used to do it & asks Kay "so that adage would be a falicey for Key?" Al then explains and it leads to this... "Now did you ever save your best pitch for someone to use later in the game?"
Mussina K's a batter.
"Now we've seen Maddux throw that pitch, how does a right hander throw it?"
Kay starts asking about throwing a type of pitch again! He seems to love asking Al these type of questions. He does it all the time.

06.03.08...Toronto in Town, Joba's first MLB start
Joba Chamberlain is finally making his first start of his career. I can't wait until he's a regular member in the rotation so I can stop hearing the continuous over-analyzing of the way the Yankees handled him and if he should be an 8th inning guy or start.
Kay is joined by Al Leiter tonight.
After Joba's first pitch...
"Al, how nervous do you think Joba is?"
Showing Leiter pitching in the World Series.
"Do you ever wear any of your World Series Rings?"
Talking about Halladay being sent down and changing his pitching style.
"Now didn't they re-work you?"

Yanks wrap up a 4 game series with the Twins. Flash & Singleton still in the booth.
I missed the first 4 innings.
Livan Hernandez pitches from one side of the rubber.
"Now John, Hernandez pitches from the extreme left of the rubber, why would he do that?" Again, Kay has been around baseball how long? He really doesn't know?
Abreu calls timeout because Hernandez and the catcher cannot agree on a pitch...
"John, why would it take so long for them to agree?"

Kay still has Flaherty & Singleton in the booth.
Flaherty mentioned something about Mike redmond getting his 10 years of MLB service & then Kay asks...
"Do players know when they hit 10 years?" And the response is "of course (you idiot)."
Abreu fouls a ball off his foot...
"Now does that automatically turn black & blue or does it swell up right away?" How dumb is that question? There are so many different things that can come into play to affect how your body reacts.
Flaherty goes on about Moehler (he is a catcher so he has to always praise all catchers & talk like they are the greatest people to ever play baseball)...
"Do you have to set your ego aside when you are a back-up catcher?"

I watched the whole game tonight but I wasn't near a computer to document "Kay's Questions" and he did ask a bunch. He was pretty annoying. I remember he questioned Singleton about playing on astro-turf and of course Singleton played in Baltimore so he said "I barely played on it so I wasn't affected." He then, of course asks Flaherty and since he was a catcher he wasn't affected either. Duh! He also pulled out the ol' "for those new to the game" statement as well.

5.30.08...Yanks invade Minnesota
Kay is joined by Singleton and Flaherty tonight in Minnesota. Game is on My9 so I don't expect a win. The Yankees also announced Joba will start on Tuesday so I'm sure a bunch of questions will be asked about that situation.
It's the 8th inning and I really haven't heard any questions. Might have been one but I don't recall. My blog might have to be shut-down if this keeps up. ;)

05.28.08
I wonder what Kay has in store for us tonight? Very little question asking last night. Very weird, but pleasurable. My one gripe from last night is his "for those new to baseball" move. I can't stand that. He says that then follows with the simplest explanation for something in the game like "for those new to the game, when a batter swings and misses, that is called a strike." C'mon Michael, let the parents teach the kids about baseball, they don't need you. Just call the game.
"Kenny, you played in Memorial Park. Did it play big?"
Ugh! Again with the "...ties a record, held by many, with three put-outs in an inning." You're not witty or original.
That's it again! Maybe he's getting bored of Singleton? He does seem to ask more questions with the more current ex-players.

05.27.08...Yanks in Baltimore
I missed the three games over the weekend. I a few family functions to attend. I managed to watch parts of the three games and I did hear a few dumb questions but I can't remember what they are so Kay gets a pass.
Tonight Kay is joined by Ken Singleton in Baltimore.
Giambi hits a bomb and then Burris gives up a couple more hits.
"Kenny you would think he's kind of unnerved after giving up a long ball like that?"
Amazingly not much else!

05.23.08...Memorial Day Weekend, Mariners Back in Town
Weird schedule. Seattle was just here a couple weeks ago. Kay is joined by David Cone today. The game is also on My9.
Kay rattles off some stats regarding Bedard and his catchers, he has a higher ERA with one vs the other. (If Kay just looks Bedard was bombed in 1 start this year & it probably was with the catcher he has a higher ERA with but he has to ask anyway.)
"Now I turn to you David, why is that?" Cone responds then gets one of Kay's favorites...
"Is it mental?"
Talking about Ichiro
"Where is Ichiro's weakness?"
"Wouldn't he be susceptible to the outside pitch the way he hits?"
"I've always wondered David, when a catcher sits so far outside can't the hitter see him?" 'I've always wondered' is another favorite of Kay's. So annoying.
AGAIN, regarding Pettitte struggling in the 4th innings of games...*Please Andy get through this inning so Kay could stop asking the same questions every game you pitch!
"Do you think he's getting fatigued in the 4th or (HERE IT IS AGAIN!) is it a mental thing?"
Gotta run out...Kay has a free pass tonight.

Flash & Singleton still with Kay.
Discussing the bad calls by the umps lately on HRs and MLB possibly going to replay...
"Instant replay, are you guys in favor or not?"
Kennedy pitching well.
"What do you see different from Kennedy tonight that you havn't seen recently?"
Flaherty is talking about how they altered Baltimore pitcher's delivery...
"Why would that give him better movement John?" And the classic answer "I have no idea." by Flaherty
Not bad again. I can live with the new Kay, let's see if it lasts.

05.21.08
Hopefully a better performance that last night. That was brutal and it wasn't even Kay's fault.
"Now he didn't have any broken bones but is it possible the hand could be sore and affect his swing?" C'mon Kay, are you for real? What a really dumb question.
Haha! They were talking about Oriole batting coach Terry Crowly then the camera shows him & somehow audio of the famous Earl Weaver rant where he curses and says "f'n Terry Crowley" comes over the telecast. Kay & crew sort of went quiet so they had to have heard it.
Joba working a 2nd inning...
"Could this be the beginning of stretching him (Joba) out for a starters roll?"
Not much else tonight. Kay was actually listenable tonight.
"Now he didn't have any broken bones but is it possible the hand could be sore and affect his swing?" C'mon Kay, are you for real? What a really dumb question.

05.20.08...O's in Town, ARod Returns!!!
Due to a rain out, Kay's mini vacation and games on Fox and ESPN, we've been without Kay for awhile except for Saturday. Don't fret, he's back with Flaherty & Singleton in the booth.
"I've always wondered John when you're catching, do you see the runner going or do you need someone to yell 'going'?" Sure, you've always wondered that. Then he asks "what if there is a lefty up?"
"If you're catching and you have a 7-0 lead, does it change your gameplan?"
"Now, did you guys spend any time on the DL?"
"Did it take long for you to get your swing back?"
I bailed on the game. The Yankees looked terrible and uninterested. A very, very poor performance.

05.17.08...The Other NY team invades the Bronx
Our almost 1 week break from Kay has sadly come to an end. The Yankees were rained out last night and surprisingly not on Fox today so we have the pleasure of an early start with Kay. His pals in the booth are the two ex-Yankee pitchers, Cone and Leiter.
On Pettitte's struggles later in games.
"Do you think he just tires? Is he getting old, what could it be?"
"Did you guys when you were preparing to start the game, did you have the lineup card in front of you?" Then Al answers with an "Of course" like saying 'you idiot, what kind of question is that'?
Then the dumb flollow-up...
"Then do you pick a guy in the lineup and you say 'I'm not going to let him beat me' and figure out possible scenarios where he can't beat you?"
Pettitte picks off a runner.
"Al when you picked someone off did it feel like a free out?"
I think he asks this one everytime Pettitte pitches...
"David, why is he so good now versus righties when he was never dominate against righties?"
Again, regarding Pettitte's struggles in the 4th and beyond.
"Now we've mentioned his struggles in later innings does he start mentally thinking about it?"
The cameras pick-up Pettitte mouthing the pitch he wants to throw to Moehler.
"Would he actually mouth that? What if the hitter saw him?" Haha! Then Cone and Leiter give him tons of examples of who else used to do it and that it's pretty common.
"Does a pitcher lose anything sitting on the bench for 24 minutes?" Again, Kay asks this type of question EVERY SINGLE TIME a team has a long inning! You know the f'n answer Kay!!!!
They show Delgado tapping his foot at the plate...
"Is that because he's trying to make up for the lost bat speed?"
"For which team do you think the Subway Series was more important to?"

05.10.08..Game on Fox
And even better no Timmy "Perhaps" McCarver and Joe Buck! Eric Karros and I don't remember the other guy's name (I'll find it) but they were very good and enjoyable to listen to.

05.09.08...Kay invades Detroit
Yesterday's game was a day game so I was at work & I wasn't about to watch the replay to hear all of Kay's annoying questions. Let's just assume there were plenty.
The Yankees are back on the road in Detroit and Ken Singleton and Al Leiter are in the booth with Kay. Leiter usually brings out plenty of questions especially with two lefties on the mound. Could be bad. Game is also on My9 and they have lost 2 of the last 3 on My9.
"As a pitcher did you like the 'bowling alley' that is carved in front of the mound?"
"Who on the Yankees gave you the most trouble?"
"Now what does holding the ball do Al, make the runner tense? Tire him out?" Another example of Kay needing to inject himself into the game. I'm sure he really had no idea why a pitcher will hold the ball longer when a speedy runner is on first.
That was about it. Not bad. Another loss on My9 though. It's like because they are on free TV they are supposed to lose & tell everyone if you want to see a win you better get YES.

05.07.08
Flaherty returns along with Cone to see if Kay can back up his record outing last night with another annoying performance. I missed the first hour of the game so I'm picking it up in the top of the fourth.
Kay rattles off a bunch of negative stats about Hafner then asks..
"At what point does he start to think he cannot hit anymore?" Again this is the same dumb question he asks about Giambi and it always gets the same responses.
"John, what do you see in Cliff Lee?"
"Now is he difficult to pick up because at 91 everyone seems to be late on him?"
Not much else. He must have been worn out from his 'dominate' performance the night before. Plus Cone and Flaherty like to talk and they gab an awful lot.

05.06.08...Indians in town
Kay is joined only by David Cone for this series.
On Carmona's increased walks
"David why would there be such a change in walk-ratio for Carmona? What's up?"
"Any mental advantage to having a 1 run lead?"...what a dumb question. He then goes on to explain what Bobby Murcer told him about Billy Martin's theory on scoring first. Kay, you knew that story so why even ask that question?
RE: Micah Owings
"What's more important a number 3 starter or a guy who can play 162 games?"
"What do you think harder to find, a guy who can hit HR's or a number 3 starter?"
Talking about Pettitte's pitches.
"So how does a change-up go? Now how would he hold a cutter?" Haha! If you go back to 4/25/08 in a game vs Cleveland he asks basically the same questions and Cone goes through the same demonstration!
"How about going to a backdoor cutter?"
"Now let me ask you this David, what's the difference between a cutter and a fastball?" C'mon Michael?!? How long have you been around baseball? You really don't know?
Molina gives sign for Pettitte to shake him off.
"Why does a catcher tell a pitcher to shake him off?" Again, you know the answer Kay. Cone then goes on and on and Kay asks...
"Now you were a guy that wanted to think on the mound?"
"Now let throw this at you, Pettitte has had success with the cutter, why is he messing with the outside corner?"
"Now that was scored a wild pitch, would you call upstairs after the game and tell them it wasn't a passed ball, it was your fault?"
The Yankees are having a long inning and this is a question always asked during it...
"Does a pitcher mind the long innings or does he kind of get stiff in the dugout?"
They just updated Ian Kennedy's 1st start in the minors.
"Now I'm gonna throw a question at you, is Ian Kennedy doing better because of the lesser competition or because there is less pressure?"
"Greatest pitcher umpire you've ever had?"
"Would he have survived Queztech?"
Discussing Carmona's struggles
"He's really missing outside to lefties, what is the manifestation?"
"You always hear a pitcher is flying open, what does that mean?"
"Now when it opens up does that mean the pitcher is trying to get to much on the ball?"...Again Kay and 99% of all viewers know the answers to these questions. Either Kay likes to talk or he thinks this is the 1st game we are all watching.
*Record Alert!!! Kay is going for the new record for most questions asked in one game! This is even more amazing because there is only one person in the booth with him!
Jeter makes an error...
"Does a pitcher have to fight it now because he shouldn't be in this jam?"
Camera shows Pettitte having a conversation with Posada
"I was wondering that would it bother Molina that Pettitte was talking with Posada?"
Pettitte is done for the day...
"So what did you think of Andy today?"
Joba seems to be shaking off Molina a bunch of times...
"What is going on with all of this dialogue with Joba and Molina?"
At least 22 questions (that I caught) asked by Michael Kay tonight! That is a new record!!! Wow! How f'n annoying?!?

05.04.08...Welcome back Bobby Murcer!
Bobby Murcer is in the booth with O'neill and Kay today.
To Murcer...
"Did you ever go to Studio 54?"
Ichiro steals his 5th base of the series & prompts these questions...
"We mention Maclarren wants Ichiro to steal 80 bases but do you really want Ichiro running that much? Don't you think that will wear him down?"
"Bobby you've served almost every position in a baseball organization did you ever want to get into coaching?"
Bobby then says Lou Pinella asked him...and there's a break in the action so...
"Bobby why did you turn him down?"
The catcher took a ball off his hand.
"Bobby are you sending the runner now after the catcher just hurt his hand?"
Talking about Giambi falling in love with the short-porch in Yankee Stadium.
"Now Bobby you played here when the right field wall was 296, did it get enticing?"
"Now Paul you were a hitter that liked to hit to all fields, did you ever try and pull the ball too much?"
On switch hitting.
"Either of you guys try?"

I missed Friday's telecast and I was at the Yankee game on Saturday. The new Stadium looks amazing!

05.01.08
Leiter & Flaherty still working with Kay. Phil Hughes just went on the DL and Ian Kennedy is pitching so there could be a lot of things there for Kay to ask about.
Enough with the " ...ties an American League record with 3 put-outs in one inning." You just said that last night, there's nothing witty about it.
Robertson has better numbers vs righties than lefties.
"Now what would dictate those numbers John?"
Yet another example of Kay liking to hear himself talk.
"Did you ever have a Reggie Bar John?"
Eiland has a fast trip to the mound.
"That was a quick trip to the mound. Why would that happen?"
It's raining and Kay asks these dumb questions. Like he's never broadcast a game in the rain before or for that matter, ever been out in the rain before.
"John, does it get slippery out there? Al, how about the mound?"
About playing under Jim Leyland
"Is Leyland like Bobby Knight, you hate him as your manager but when you leave or retire you love him?"
The pitcher tries to knock down a come-backer by Sheffield.
"Al you're always taught never to do that (stick your leg or hand out to stop a come-backer), but is it just instinct?"
Stupid question ALERT!!!
"Are you seeing enough fight out of this team? Do you sense a 'whoa-is-me' with all the injuries?"
Kay says Ian Kennedy was supposed to be straightening things out...
"Al what's your review on Ian Kennedy?"
*Do we have to hear about Robinson Cano's slump every single time he comes up? He's 2 for his last 28, 2 for his last 29, 2 for his last 30....on and on and on...ENOUGH! All of us watching know he's not hitting! We watch the games & can see his average. We do not need you to point it out to us all game!
Final question of the night! I'm sure he's never posed this question.
"Guys you've both made that jump (obviously) from AAA to the Majors, is it a big jump?"

Discussing Bonderman's struggles this year.
"Al, explain to me, why the sudden drop in velocity?"
Al says the Tigers want Bonderman's pitches to have more movement as a result the velocity will drop off and Kay asks
"Why take away his money pitch?"
Discussing Brandon Inge
"Why is he (Inge) so against catching?"
Pettitte struggling.
"Why is he (Pettitte) missing location-wise? Is it fatigue? Was he set back by missing time in spring training?" Now let's analyze how dumb this series of questions are: How would Leiter even know? He is not inside Pettitte has he asked him. Plus let's face it, he is facing a very good offensive team. Now all of a sudden he's struggling so let's blame missing spring training? How about stop making excuses for Andy, I'm sure he's not making excuses for himself.

04.29.08...Tigers come into the Bronx
UGH!!!! Al Leiter and Flaherty in the booth! That is a recipe for a ton of questions. Now the Yankees have a new catcher in the lineup so there wil be a ton of questions to make Flaherty feel important because he is such an expert on catching. And I'm sure Hughes will be a major subject for Kay to ask Al Leiter about. This is gonna be annoying!
This is the obvious question that was going to be asked. I could have written it this morning knowing he'd ask.
"How tough is it for Stewart to catch Hughes after never catching him?"
Commenting on Stewart's signals.
"Did you ever put chalk or whiteout on your fingers so the pitcher can see the signals better?"
They are showing Stewart putting whiteout on the back of his fingers.
"How come they are putting the whiteout on the back of his fingers and not the tips?"
On Hughes's struggles.
"Does your mind start to play games with you at this point Al?"
Stewart is having a tough time catching Hughes.
"Do you lose faith in the catcher if something, something, something?" Kay asked some dumb question (Something about crossing up the catcher) that even Al Leiter had no idea what he was asking because Al goes "I'm trying to figure out what you just asked."
Hughes still struggling.
"When do you make the deliniation between growing pains and he just doesn't have it now? How can you tell it's not a physical problem?"
Rogers blows on his hands because it's cold.
"Does blowing on your hands help? Here's my question, if they allow you to blow on your hands on a cold day why can't you do it on a warm day?"
Stewart has a ball fouled off of his mask.
"You can honestly say that doesn't hurt, John?"

I took advantage of the game not being blacked out on ESPN and watched it on there tonight. The three in the booth for ESPN are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than Kay. Although Steve Phillips & his disdain for the Yankees is slightly annoying, Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser are very good. BTW Orel, Mussina is not a Hall of Famer.

04.27.08
The Yankees were on Fox yesterday but they are back on YES today with Kay and Cone in the booth. I have recently been hearing some people call into WFAN 660 (sports talk in NY/NJ area) mentioning Kay's constant questioning and they have noted taht his "style" seems to be rubbing off on the other people in the booth so it apparently is starting to annoy other people too.
A.Cabrera of the Indians appears to be hanging over the plate so Kay asks...
"How would you combat that, bust him inside?"
Discussing Olendorff's reaction after giving up walk-off hit to V.Martinez yesterday.
"What's it like after your first walk-off?"
Kay knows this answer but he can't resist...
"What did you after the perfect game(the next game)?" (he walked the 1st batter, Robbie Alomar)
He already asked O'Neill opening weekend what he did with his Silver Slugger Award so time to find out what Cone did with his Cy Young Award.
"David, you won a CY Young Award, what did you do with the actual award?"
Wang takes a shot back at him.
"Did you ever get hit when you were on the mound?"
Wang pitching well today...
"David, do you think there is anything in Wang's mind about how he got roughed up by the Indians in the Playoffs last year?"...now why would he even be thinking something dumb like that? Wang has yet to give up a run today and is dominating the lineup. Why would he be thinking of last year's playoffs?
About the weather.
"Is this good weather to pitch?"

04.25.2008...Kay heads to Cleveland
Kay has only David Cone in the booth tonight. O'Neill probably couldn't take the intense questioning and went home. This is also a My9 game so they could be in trouble.
After Pettitte gives up a single on a good pitch.
"What ticks off a hitter more, giving up a hit on a good pitch or giving up a hit on a bad pitch?"
RE:Pettitte
"Do you think coming up on a team of veterans helped him?" No, it probably hurt him. Duh, great question Michael.
2 pitches, 2 out...
"Now if you're a starter here, do you want Posada to take a pitch here?" Wow, does this guy think we're all idiots watching? No, Posada should run right up to the plate and swing right away so Pettitte has as little rest as possible.
They replay Giambi's HR
"What was Byrd trying to do with that pitch?"
They start discussing how Andy holds his pitches.
"So the fingers for the cutter will be at the 12 o'clock position while the change will be at the 11 o'clock position, right?" I'm sure he didn't know that and was dying to ask.
After Andy gives up back-to-back HR's, Cone is explaining why.
"Why is he slowing his delivery down?"
After an Indian is hit by a pitch...
"When you hit someone did you feel bad?"
Here's a random classic Kay question...
"When you're on the mound can you think of anything but the game or can your mind wander? Can you pitch well if your mind wanders? I've always wondered if you're on the mound and you just had a fight with your girlfriend or wife do you think about that?" ...That right there sums up exactly what this blog is all about.
After Pettitte gives up a single on a good pitch.

It's raining in Chicago so more time for Kay to prepare some excellent questions! I picked up the game in the 3rd inning tonight.
The grounds crew is out fixing the mound. That spawns this.
"Let me ask you this David, Floyd came out to pitch but Hughes didn't. Is it because of the 50 minute delay or because there is more rain in the forecast?"...BTW, what a dumb question that is! Why would Cone actually know that? Maybe the Yankees want to be extra cautious with Hughes and the White Sox have a different philosophy? It could be many reasons!!!
Commenting on the many warmup pitches Floyd is getting.
"Didn't Floyd get his warmups when the Yankees were in the field?"
On Hawkins' pitching motion.
"David, what does taking the ball early out of the glove do for Hawkins?"
On Joe Crede's success vs. right-handers.
"What makes him a better hitter against righties, Paul?"

Cone and O'Neill again handling the questions.
On the '98 team.
"Is that the best team you ever saw?"
After Mussina doesn't get a close call.
"Do you think an umpire pays attention to how you're doing, if you're having a poor season or struggling?
Haha!!!!! He asks it AGAIN next inning!!!
"I want to revisit what I asked you last inning, when you were less dominate did you not get the calls off the plate?"
Camera shows Moose blowing on his hands so I'm sure he's always been wondering...
"In weather like this when they allow you to blow on your hands can't you spit in your hands?"
Questioning Cone now...
"Did you ever try and doctor a pitch?"
"Now explain, if the scuff is on a certain side the ball will rise?"
"So you place the scuff the end of the ball you want it to go?"
Hawkins comes in and guess what, they start talking about him wearing 22 now. That brought out this beauty...
"Both of you, I've always wondered, did it weird you out when you saw people wearing jersey's and T-shirts with your name and number on it?"

04.22.08...Kay goes to Chi-town
Yankees open a three game series in Chicago vs the White Sox. Kay has David Cone and Paul O'Neill in the booth. Call me crazy but that sounds like a recipe for plenty of questions!
After Melky throws to 3rd instead of 2nd
"If you're pitching there David, would you rather the throw go to second instead of 3rd to kepp the double play in order?"
On Giambi's struggles.
"When does he just start trying to hit the ball to the left side for the easy single?"
On trying to pull everything.
"Did that ever happen to you Paul?"
Again Kay starts asking O'Neill about Hawkins wearing Paul's number. Just check back when O'Neill was in the booth last and you'll see the same exact questions.
A bat breaks as Swisher was swinging.
"Paul, there is no way that bat just broke because of his swing and not a foul ball?"
On Jim Thome.
"Does he have the type of swing that age will affect it?"
Cone explains Wang holding runners on prompts Kay to ask...
"When you say 'look at 3rd' you mean peripherally?"
And then this dandy...
"This might sound strange but how much do you really have to look at the target? I mean you already know the strike zone."
C'mon Kay! Again, you just love to hear yourself talk! That's something you really didn't know and had to ask?
On Bruney's command.
"I've always heard the catcher will call the breaking ball when you are struggling with your command?"
Of course Kay now asks Cone and O'Neill about 'the Joba debate', is he more valuable as a starter or 8th inning guy?
Ugh...here we go. The Yankees have a pretty decent lead late in the game so here goes the questions. He cannot stop talking!!!!
On the Yankees poor start with the bats.
"Let me ask you Paul, does it affect the bats when you're playing in the warm weather in spring training and then go North and play in the cold?"
On facing MacDougal
"Is it a little uneasy being up there when he doesn't know where it's going?" I wonder if it's tougher to hit a guy like that?"
They are discussing Farnsworth throwing at Manny AGAIN! Everytime Farnsworth comes in is Kay going to bring that up? Probably.
"Does it matter how you got hit or that got hit?"...Huh?
After Farnsworth gives up a homer.
"Now Paul, how do you explain it? A guy with his stuff gets hit that hard."
After Melky throws to 3rd instead of 2nd

Let's see if we can have another light night of questioning from Kay.
On Cal Ripken
"Kenny you were there when he came up, did you think 'good player' or 'Hall of Famer'?"
Not much more after that. Wow!

04.18.08...Back on the road in Baltimore
First off I'd like to comment on the Farnsworth pitch to Manny last night and the insane amount of talk it got and will probably still get.
The trio in the booth for the Yankees talked about it for two straight innings with Kay of course leading the charge. He asked the same thing he asks every single time a batter is hit in any game, whether it was the Red Sox or KC or TB. "Was that on purpose?" "Will they hit the Yankee leftfielder because Manny plays left?" "Will they retaliate?" "When?" "Next series?" "Do players remember?" "Will they go after ARod?" ENOUGH! Manny, the one who was 'thrown at' said it himself "We hit one of their best players last night, I guess they wanted to send a message." EXACTLY! NOW they are even. You guys just want to drone on and make it a big story so especially Kay can keep talking. And I didn't hear him but people told me Gammons went crazy on ESPN about Farnsworth...Peter, did you go crazy about Pedro when he sent Jeter & Soriano to the hospital in the same game a few years ago? Did you go crazy when Dice K hit ARod about 3 times last year? Did you go crazy when Aardsma hit ARod the night before? The Red Sox pitchers hit Yankee hitters constantly, enough is enough. Manny wasn't hit so he obviously wasn't hurt and maybe Farnsworth threw at him but maybe his intention was not to hit him like the Red Sox pitchers do.
On to the game. Hopefully (I doubt it) Kay used up all his questions the past two nights. We'll see.
Singleton in the booth tonight with Kay.
On John Shelby's nickname
"Was there a reason behind 'T-Bone'?"
Wow! That's it? 1 question? Not bad.
I'm going to start tracking the Yankees record when they play on Channel 9 (I refuse to call it by it's horrible name My9). I bet for some reason they lose more than they win when the games are on "free TV". So far 0-1, losing 8-2 tonight to Baltimore.

Leiter and Flaherty both in the booth as Kay attempts to follow up his record breaking question night with another night of annoyance and interviewing.
On Josh Beckett.
"Al, you spent time with him in the Florida organization, how was he as a teammate?"
Kay throws out some useless stat about Mussina vs lefties and the of course asks...
"Why?"
This spurs Leiter and Flaherty to drone on and on and Kay follows with...
"Is it an inability or reluctance to throw inside?"
On pitching to Manny
"So John, you've caught the guy, what pitch is he looking for to get out Manny?"
I was in & out of the game from 8 - 9:30 but I did hear a couple more questions by Kay during that time.
On Mussina still...
"Will he finally pitch inside now?"
On Farnsworth pitching inside to Manny.
"Will Farnsworth pitch him inside?"
Then he proceeds to throw a picth behind Manny and predictably, say it together now...
"Was that on purpose?"
On the Yankees swung early in the count.
"You have to wonder if it's in the back of their minds that they're going to get one up and in?"
Camera pans to Wang and Hughes on the bench.
"When pitchers make that motion, is that a 2-seamer?"
How about this one? Can you just please let us watch the game Kay!?!?
"Al, do they tinker with your stuff more when you're in the dugout or in the pen?"
That was a grand total of at least 28 questions in the 2 games vs Boston!
On Josh Beckett.

04.16.08...Kay and the Yankees back in the Bronx!
Michael Kay is back from his brief four day hiatus just in time to call the Yankee/Red Sox games. John Flaherty and for the first time this season, Al Leiter are in the booth with Kay. Call me crazy but I have a feeling the questions will be flying tonight!
Here we go!
Kay throws out some useless stat about BA vs Bucholtz when a batter has 2 strikes.
"Is that because of his great curveball?"
On Varitek's struggle's with Wang
"When a batter is 0 for 18 against you, are you worried about the 'due theory'?"
On Wang facing the Red Sox in back-to-back starts.
"Al when you pitched well against a team and then faced them the next week did you change the way you attacked them?"
"John, how about you, did you have a different gameplan?"
After Wang is visited on the mound by the pitching coach.
"Let me ask you this Al, when a pitching coach comes out to the mound and tells you what you're doing wrong, how difficult is it to fix it?"
On Randy Johnson
"Was he ornery to catch?"
On pitching to Manny.
"Al what would be your perfect pitch to him?"
"John, what about you?"
*Note: Kay is super-annoying and on record pace tonight, firing off 8 questions so far in just 2 1/2 innings!
On Yankee/Red Sox games
"John, what was Yankee/Red Sox like for you?"
"Al, you opened your career with the Yankees then later came back and beat them later in your career, what did those matchups mean to you?"
After Moeller broke his bat singling in a run.
"How tough is it for a pitcher to collect himself after a battle like that and to lose it on a broken bat blooper?"
On Wang having different results vs Boston this outing as opposed to last week.
"When Wang dominated the Red Sox last week he threw a bunch of 4-seam fastballs. This time, is it because he has a different catcher or did he just change hi plan of attack?"
"You also have to wonder, was he comfortable with Moehller?"
Another random useless question.
"When Wang came back in the dugout Mussina came over and spoke to him, does a pitcher want to talk to anyone after an outing like this?"
Yet another completely random question
"Al when you first came up, was the next pitch for you with a 2-0 count always a fastball?"
Side rant: Can we stop talking about the Yankees brutal schedule and the times they are getting into cities? It isn't like it's 1920 where the players are taking trains and buses to games. They have the best airplane money can buy, I'm sure it's more comfortable than any plane I'd ever travel in. They can recline and sleep and relax. Life as a basball player in 2008 must be sooooo rough.
And another thing...enough with the camera shot like I'm sitting right behind the umpire!!! I want to see the game from centerfield like I have for the last 30 plus year!
On the Yankees getting in late before games.
"John, how dabilitating is it, getting in at 4:00AM before games?"
A Kay random theory that turned into a question.
"When the offense scores so much in the early innings are they worn out or are the pitchers just better as they get into later innings?"
Wow! 17 questions by Kay tonight asked to Flaherty & Leiter. Was I watching "Centerstage" tonight or a baseball game?

04.14.08...Two in TB, Kay off again!
No Michael Kay again!!! But who's complaining? John Flaherty is doing the play-by-play (not very well) but the good thing is, he obviously didn't go to the Michal Kay School of Broadcasting because the questions are almost non-existent. We all know Kay will not miss the upcoming 2 game series with Boston on Tuesday and Wednesday so my excitement will be short-lived.
*Note to Eric Wedge...Joe Borowski is awful! I don't even think I'd trade Farnsworth or Hawkins for him. I'd consider it though. ;)

The game is being televised on Fox on Saturday so my ears will bloodied by maybe the worst baseball team of Joe Buck and Timmy "Perhaps" McCarver. I cannot take these two. Buck tries to be witty and funny; he is not, and my blog is not long enough to document all the things I cannot stand about McCarver, the main thing being the amount of times he says "perhaps" in a telecast. Take note. He says it plenty of times.
Sunday's game is on ESPN and a note to Mark Grace, the "world does not stop on it's axis to watch the Yankees and Red Sox on ESPN" whenever they play as you stated during your game on Sunday. But the fact is is that ESPN is in the business to make money and more people tune-in to see the best rivalry in baseball than any other two teams when they play. I'm sure everyone wasn't going to rush home from their Sunday dinners to watch D'backs/Rockies if they were the Main Event. Nobody even cares about your team out West, not even your own fans who showed up 31,000 "strong" on Sunday (out of a 49,00 seat stadium) to see one of the best, most exiting teams in baseball. Idiot.

04.11.08...Kay Returns in Beantown
Kay is back with David Cone and Kenny Singleton in the booth.
On Cone's cab ride to Fenway.
"Here's the key question, who paid for the cab ride?"
On aluminum bats changing the game.
"You said things are different now because of aluminum bats, tell me why?"
On pitching in the rain.
"Is there a pitch that is more difficult to pitch in the rain?"
And of course...
On hitting in the rain.
"On the hitters side, Kenny, is it difficult to hit in the rain?"
There was a couple other questions he asked later on that I meant to take note of but I forgot what they were. I'm pretty confident they'll be asked again sometime during the season.

Quizmaster Kay has thankfully not made the trip to KC so we're question-free for at least 3 days.

04.07.08...Let's Go Memphis!
Same 2 in the booth with the "Quizmaster". I'll be out of the game around 9:15 to watch Memphis take on Kansas.
On Mussina's pitching style
"Why doesn't he like pitching inside?"
"If he lived inside more would he be able to get away with outside pitches?"
On Melky's ritual of tapping the catchers shin guards
"John did that annoy you?"
On Molina's 'hot' throwing
"Do you think that you can get on a hot throwing streak like a hot hitting streak?"
On Damon bunting
"Wouldn't you want Damon swinging here?"

Same duo being quizzed by Kay today. Kay starting out early with the questions! 2 and a half innings in the books and Kay is going crazy with the questions!!!
On Wang's higher ERA at the Stadium
"John is there a legitimate reason why Wang would have over a 2 run more ERA at home?"
On Wang having trouble vs Eric Hinski
"Should a pitcher go away from his strength just because a batter has success against him?"
On Cano's struggles
"Kenny, after how many at bats did you start getting nervous about your average?"...Singleton answered..."John, how about you?"
BTW Kay, Mussina didn't pitch well in his 1st start as you just said. 5 2/3, 4 runs, 3 ER & 2 K's is not well. It's OK.
On fielding foul balls by a catcher...
"Did you ever hit anyone or throw your mask at a batter when you were going back for a foul ball?"
"Here's another question, how did you learn to go back on foul balls in Little League?"
After Betemit's poor baserunning
"How long after you get back in the dugout does someone come up to you and talk to you about your mistake or do they just let you be?"
On the 'Rays'
"How many times per year will people still call them Devil Rays?"

I missed the majority of today's game on TV. Instead I had the 'pleasure' of listening to Suzyn Waldman on the radio.

04.04.08...Tampa Bay is in the Bronx
Two new faces in the booth for Kay to quiz. John Flaherty and Ken Singleton.
On umpires...
"Is there an umpire you remember that used to admit he got a call wrong?"
On uniform numbers...
"What number did you wear the most Flash (Flaherty)?"

Paul O'Neill is receiving the questions again tonight.
(I was in and out of the game for the 8 to 9 hour so I might have missed some important questions)
On scouting reports of the pitcher...
"How much information do you process that you get from the pregame meetings?"
On sacrifice bunting...
"Paul, how many times did you sacrifice bunt?"
On another bunt situation...
"Paul, here's (ANOTHER!) question, do you bunt here with Jeter?"

The interviewee again is Paul O'Neill.
On Derek Jeter's hitting...
"Why does Jeter have that natural ability to hit the ball to right field?"
On O'Neill's batting award...
"Where is the silver bat (you won) for winning the batting title? Above the fireplace, on the mantle?"
On the infield shift facing Jason Giambi...
"I think I've asked you this before, (*Many times I'm sure!) when they are playing the shift like that on you isn't it easy to just hit the ball against the shift?"
On the Yankees having no off days for almost 3 weeks...
"Is it tough playing 20 straight days in a row?"
On LaTroy Hawkins wearing #21...
"I should ask you, (*Of course, and I bet for not the last time!) do you mind that someone else is wearing it?"

04.01.08...Opening Day!
Let the questioning begin! Tonight the interviewee in the booth with Kay is Paul O'Neill
On Halladay's pitches...
"Is there a spin on the ball that you look for?"
The YES camera pans the train outside Yankee Stadium which raises this important question...
"Paul have you ever taken the train to Yankee Stadium?"
On pitching to ARod...
"Paul, how would you pitch to ARod?"
On new Yankee manager Joe Girardi...
"Is it odd seeing your buddy there in the dugout and not Joe Torre?"
After Armando Rios misses a hanging curveball...
"Does it get in your head as a hitter after you've missed an obvious mistake by the pitcher?"
After Vernon Wells dove for a ball and missed...
"Was there any other way for Wells to approach that ball instead of diving?"
